As expected, Marcus Belcher has been named as the newest assistant on Chris Lowery's coaching staff. Lowery made the announcement this past week. Belcher will replace longtime assistant Rodney Watson who left for the University of Southern Indiana last month.
With the addition, the Salukis now have four former players on the staff. Belcher joins Brad Korn, Tony Young, and of course Lowery on the bench. Lance Irvin, who did not play at Southern, is also an assistant.
Belcher's hiring gives the Salukis one of the younger staffs in the MVC, let alone, the NCAA. Belcher is 29 years old, Korn will turn 28 in August, Young (a graduate assistant) is 25, Irvin is in his 30s (SIU does not list his age), and Lowery will turn 37 next month.
The young staff goes along with a young team, as the Salukis will only have one senior next season - Tony Freeman (who will be playing his first year for the Salukis). The team's juniors, will be mostly newcomers to the program, except for Carlton Fay. Most of the team will be considered sophomores, after having a freshman-dominated team a year ago.
Much like the team, the coaches will try and show that age does not matter and produce winning results nonetheless.
